Which means thick shoulders, strong arms and legs, and extremely fast on his feet. History: History! Personality: All the broken hearts in the world still beat. Let's not make it harder than it has to be... ...I'm a little let down, but I'm not dead There's a little bit more that has to be said You play me, now I play you too Lets just call it over... (Girls chase Boys by Ingrid Michaelson) Athos's personality can be divided between two different time periods - Before MiLady, and After MiLady. It is said that you do not truly know yourself until you have suffered, and for Athos that seems truer than most. Before MiLady, Athos's most defining personality trait was Nobility. Not just because he was the Comte de Fere, but because he showed the leadership skills, the honour, and the genteel manner with both rich and poor within his lands. He was a fair landlord, and someone who cared and protected those who lived on the de Fere estate and surrounding properties. In fact, when he later ignored all these things in his depression, his lands all but fell apart. Athos also showed a shrewdness towards the business affairs of running an estate that showcased his quick thinking, wit, and over all Intelligence -- all that would prove useful in his future as a Musketeer. Falling in love with MiLady exposed another part of his personality - his Romantic traits. Athos has shown in flashbacks to be very passionate and loving towards MiLady. Showering her with both physical affection, but heartfelt declarations and gifts besides, including the locket that he gifted her. He was utterly devoted to her - and remained so even after her 'exection', even though he knew she had to be killed for the death of his brother at her hands. It was, unfortunately, all these parts of himself that MiLady shattered with her crime, and turned him into the man he is today. Seven years later, and Bitterness has soaked Athos clean through. He no longer believes in marriage, and it is only through the redeeming love of his fellow Musketeers and his brothers, that he believes in love. Becoming a Musketeer is in fact, the only thing that kept him from dying in the gutter of alcohol poisoning, but it also turned him undenialably Cynical. He rarely thinks the best of any one at first impression, even if he is willing to give them the benefit of proof before he believes the worst. Beyond that, her betrayal unlocked Rage within him - a rage that sometimes leads him to self-destructive acts. He no longer seems to fear death -- but seems to crave it. All of this, though, is built from a sense of Guilt. Guilt that he let MiLady in his life, that he was blind to her faults and her past, and that cost him his brother. Guilt that perhaps, he should not have ordered the execution of the woman he loved. Guilt for those he left behind in his depression - his village, his farmers and servants. This guilt manifested, oddly enough, to an almost fanatical sense of Loyalty to those who have gone the distance to earn his trust and respect. He would put himself through fire for d'Taragan, Aramis, and Porthos. He has gone out of his way time and time again to protect Captain Treveille, and even put himself in harms way for the King and Queen multiple times. Not just from a sense of duty, but because he is loyal to them personally. Athos is a deeply flawed man, but in those fragments are parts of a very good, very noble soul. It is just drowning in wine and self-loathing, most of the time.
